Facebook Privacy Changes and How They Affect You

Facebooklogo Facebook announced in a press conference today they will begin rolling out their new privacy setting over the next couple of weeks.

In a nutshell, Facebook would like your status updates to become public... much like Twitter.

As you can imagine, this has upset quite a few people, who love Facebook specifically because its private.

The good news is, if you don't want your privacy settings to change, they don't have to.

To keep your Facebook settings private, just do the following:

  • Log on to Facebook

  • Select 'Settings', 'Privacy Settings' from the upper right

  • Select 'Profile'

  • Make sure everything under both the 'Basic' and 'Contact Information' tabs is set to "Only Friends."  (Your other options are 'Friends of Friends' and 'Everyone')

  • Click 'Save Changes'

  • Once again, select 'Settings', 'Privacy Settings' from the upper right

  • Now, select 'Search'

  • On this page, you can determine how much information someone searching for you on Facebook can see.  I would keep 'Search Visibility' set to 'Everyone.'  Then, make your decisions about exactly what they can see by checking and unchecking the boxes below.

  • When finished, select 'Save Changes'

That should do it.  If, however, you're prompted over the next couple of weeks to change your security settings, you can simply select 'Keep My Existing Settings'

Please note, this is for the personal side of your Facebook account.  People have always, and will still be able to find your Facebook Business Page.

Speaking of which, if you're not following SIMB on Facebook, you can do so by going to www.facebook.com/stampingismybusiness and clicking 'Become A Fan.'
